Casino Bonuses

Most casino bonuses aren't as good as they look — the wagering requirements, game restrictions, and expiry dates that decide whether a bonus is actually worth claiming.

Before you claim anything

What Actually Makes a Bonus Worth Claiming

The headline percentage is the least important number on a bonus offer. These four things determine whether a bonus has positive expected value.

🔄
Wagering requirement
How many times you must bet the bonus amount before withdrawing. 10× is reasonable. 35× makes most offers worthless. 50× means the casino is counting on you never clearing it.
10–20× = acceptable
35×+ = usually avoid
🎮
Game contribution
Slots typically contribute 100% to wagering. Blackjack and video poker often contribute 10% or 0% — which turns a “25× wagering” bonus into effectively 250× for table game players.
100% = genuine value
10% or less = skip it
📅
Expiry time
How long you have to complete the wagering. 7 days is tight for any bonus over . 30 days is workable. No expiry is rare and genuinely valuable — Everygame’s poker bonus is the only mainstream example.
30 days+ = workable
7 days = pressure
💰
Max cashout cap
Some bonuses cap how much you can withdraw from winnings. A 0 cap on a 0 bonus is reasonable. A 0 cap on a 0 bonus means you’re playing to win at most 0 even if you run well.
No cap = best case
Cap below bonus = avoid

A Real Example: What 35× Wagering Actually Means

A casino offers a 100% match bonus up to 0. Sounds good. The fine print says 35× wagering on the bonus amount, slots only, 7-day expiry.nnYou’d need to wager ,000 through slots within 7 days. At a typical 4% house edge on slots, the expected cost of clearing the wagering is 0 — more than the 0 bonus is worth. The offer has negative expected value before you even start.nnThis is why we calculate EV on every bonus we review. A 50% match with 10× wagering is worth far more than a 200% match with 40× wagering. The calculation on the right is the one that matters.

Worked example — 100% match up to 0, 35× wagering, slots only
Deposit 0
Bonus received +0
Wagering required 0 × 35 = ,000
Slots house edge ~4%
Expected cost to clear −0
Bonus EV

Negative EV. You’re better off skipping the bonus and playing with your own 0.

Joshua Hill
Joshua’s note on casino bonuses
I’ve claimed hundreds of bonuses over twenty years and most were negative EV — not because of bad luck, but because the terms were designed to make them negative EV. The ones worth claiming are exceptions: low wagering, long expiry, no game restrictions, or a poker reload that releases on rake. Everything else I’d skip and just play with my own money. Every guide we publish here will tell you exactly which category each offer falls into.
