Blackjack

Blackjack has the best odds of any game on the casino floor — and the shortest distance between playing it well and playing it badly. Everything here is worked out rather than asserted: the right play for every hand, what a set of table rules actually costs you, and where the game is worth playing.

Where are you right now?

Three ways in. Pick the one that sounds like you.

Never played
Learn the game first
Blackjack takes ten minutes to learn and a lifetime to play badly. Start with what the dealer is actually obliged to do, because that is where the whole edge comes from.
You want the edge
Choose the table, not just the play
Correct play sets a floor. What decides the rest is which game you sat down at — and one rule on the felt is worth more than every decision you will make all night.

The best odds on the floor, and the one rule that ruins them

Played correctly, a normal six-deck game costs about 0.46% — better than any other game in the building. Two rules can take that to over 2% without changing anything you can see happening at the table.

Why the dealer’s card decides everything

You act first. Bust, and your bet is gone before the dealer turns a card — that single ordering is where the entire house edge comes from, and it is why every decision you make is really a question about the card the dealer is showing.

A dealer showing a five or a six busts more than four times in ten. Showing an ace, fewer than two times in ten. Same deck, same rules, wildly different hands to be sitting across from.

Dealer bust rates by upcard, six decks, dealer standing on soft 17: 2 35.4% · 3 37.4% · 4 39.4% · 5 41.6% · 6 42.3% · 7 26.2% · 8 24.5% · 9 22.8% · 10 23.0% · A 16.7%.

What each rule on the felt is worth

Table rules are not decoration. The payout on a natural is the one that matters: a table paying 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2 costs 1.36% on its own — roughly three times the entire house edge of the game you were about to play, and nothing you do with the cards gets it back.

Against a six-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17: blackjack paying 6 to 5 costs 1.36%, a dealer who hits soft 17 costs 0.22%, no double after split costs 0.12%, doubling restricted to 9–11 costs 0.10%, and late surrender gives back 0.07%.

Every figure in this section is solved in your browser when the page loads, by the same engine behind our two calculators — each possible opening deal played out optimally and weighted by how often it comes up. House edges assume basic strategy throughout.

The chart, solved rather than copied

Your hand down the side, the dealer’s card across the top. Every cell below is worked out when this page loads — by the same solver behind our calculators — for the most common game you will sit down at: six decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double on anything, double after split, blackjack pays 3 to 2.

The chart needs JavaScript, because it is solved here rather than stored. The decisions people look up most, for the game described above:

  • Hard 16 against a 7 or higher: hit. Against 2 through 6: stand.
  • Hard 12 against a 2 or 3: hit. Against 4, 5 or 6: stand.
  • Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.
  • Double hard 11 against everything except an ace, and hard 10 against everything except a ten or an ace.
  • Soft 18 (A,7): double against 3 through 6, stand against 2, 7 or 8, hit against 9, 10 or an ace.
  • Never take insurance.

The strategy path

In order. Each one assumes the one above it.

  1. 01 Basic strategy Coming soon The mathematically correct play for every hand against every upcard. Everything else on this page assumes you have this one.
  2. 02 The chart Coming soon The same thing in a grid you can actually memorise, split into hard totals, soft totals and pairs.
  3. 03 Doubling down Coming soon When to put out a second bet, and the restricted tables where you cannot.
  4. 04 Pair splitting Coming soon Which pairs to split against which upcards, and why tens are never one of them.
  5. 05 Surrender Coming soon The rule most players never use, worth about a tenth of a percent when it is offered.
  6. 06 Insurance Coming soon Why it is a losing bet at any count you are not tracking, whatever the dealer calls it.
  7. 07 Table selection Coming soon Reading the felt before you sit. Worth more than every playing decision you will make in a session.
  8. 08 Bankroll Coming soon How much to bring, sized against the swing rather than the expected loss.
  9. 09 Betting systems Coming soon Martingale, Paroli, and why no staking pattern changes a negative edge.
  10. 10 Card counting Coming soon What it really requires, what it really returns, and whether it is worth your evening.

The casinos we recommend whose blackjack terms we have actually read. Check the rules at the table once you are inside — the payout and the soft-17 rule matter far more than the brand on the door.
