Video Poker

Video poker is the one casino game that shows you its odds before you play: the pay table is right there in the game. Read it, hold the right cards, and the best games pay back more than 99% of what you bet, the best versions of a few more than 100%. Everything here is solved by our engine rather than copied from a chart, from the return of each pay table to the best way to hold a dealt hand.

Where are you right now?

Three ways in, depending on how well you know the game.

Never played
Learn the game first
Video poker is five-card draw against a pay table, not against a dealer or other players. Learn what the game pays for and every decision after that follows from it.
You want the edge
Choose the pay table, not just the hold
The pay table decides more than any card you hold. Two versions of the same game can pay back 99.54% and 95.00%, and the best versions of a few games pay back more than you bet.

The pay table is the house edge

Video poker shows you its odds before you play. Played perfectly, 9/6 Jacks or Better returns 99.54% of every bet. The same game paying 8 for a full house and 5 for a flush returns 97.30%, and nothing you do with the cards wins the difference back.

Same game, six pay tables

Jacks or Better games are known by two numbers: what a full house and a flush pay for each coin. The rest of the pay table is the same on all six below, so those two numbers set the price of the game.

9/6 Jacks or Better keeps 0.46% , returns 99.54%
9/5 Jacks or Better keeps 1.55% , returns 98.45%
8/6 Jacks or Better keeps 1.61% , returns 98.39%
8/5 Jacks or Better keeps 2.70% , returns 97.30%
7/5 Jacks or Better keeps 3.85% , returns 96.15%
6/5 Jacks or Better keeps 5.00% , returns 95.00%

“Keeps” is what each pay table holds back of every bet over the long run, with every hand played correctly. At $1.25 a hand and 1,000 hands an hour, that is $5.75 an hour at 9/6 and $62.50 at 6/5.

Where the 99.54% comes from

Mostly from small wins. Two pair and a pair of jacks or better come up in a third of all hands and pay back 47.31 of every 100 you bet between them. The royal flush, 1 in 40,391 hands, pays back 1.98.

Royal flush 800 for 1 1 in 40,391 pays back 1.98
Straight flush 50 for 1 1 in 9,148 pays back 0.55
Four of a kind 25 for 1 1 in 423 pays back 5.91
Full house 9 for 1 1 in 87 pays back 10.36
Flush 6 for 1 1 in 91 pays back 6.61
Straight 4 for 1 1 in 89 pays back 4.49
Three of a kind 3 for 1 1 in 13.4 pays back 22.33
Two pair 2 for 1 1 in 7.7 pays back 25.86
Jacks or better 1 for 1 1 in 4.7 pays back 21.46

9/6 Jacks or Better, every hand played correctly, five coins a hand; “pays back” is out of every 100 bet. The royal’s share is why the fifth coin matters: bet fewer and the royal pays 250 for 1 instead of 800, and the same game returns 98.37%.

Every figure in this section was solved by our engine: all 2,598,960 possible deals, each one held the best of its 32 ways and drawn against every card left in the deck. It matches the long-published returns for these games to the last decimal shown.

Every hold, solved

Five cards can be held 32 ways. Pick a hand below or deal one, and every hold is priced in your browser against every possible draw, for the game you choose. The same five cards are often played differently from one game to the next.

The solver needs JavaScript, because every hold is worked out here rather than stored. Four decisions it settles, for 9/6 Jacks or Better, with the return of each hold for every 1 you bet:

  • A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 3♠: a flush, and four to the royal. Break the flush. Holding A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ returns 18.4255; keeping the flush, 6.
  • 5♣ 5♦ 9♦ K♦ 2♦: a small pair, or four to a flush. Hold the four diamonds for 1.2128, not the fives for 0.8237.
  • K♥ K♠ Q♥ J♥ 7♣: a pair of kings, or three to the royal. Keep the kings for 1.5365, against 1.4884 for the royal draw. In Double Double Bonus and Deuces Wild the royal draw wins.
  • J♥ J♠ 4♦ 4♣ 9♠: two pair. Keep both pairs for 2.5957, against 2 for standing pat. In Deuces Wild, where two pair pays nothing, keep one pair.
